We Demand Freedom: Solidarity with Civil Society in Kazakhstan

The Human Rights Platform of the Civic Movement “Dayanç” (Turkmenistan) expresses its solidarity with civil activists in Kazakhstan who are currently facing persecution for their peaceful civic stance, freedom of expression, and participation in public life. We are deeply concerned by the increasing pressure on activists, journalists, and citizens who openly express their views. According to available information, Marat Zhylandbayev and Amangeldy Dzhakhin are in detention, while Elvira Bekzadina, Nurbol Onerkhan, and Kambar Zhusupov have been placed under house arrest. Despite the different measures imposed, a clear pattern emerges — isolation, pressure, and attempts to silence independent voices. We emphasize that persecution for expressing opinions and engaging in peaceful civic activity constitutes a direct violation of fundamental human rights enshrined in international instruments, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The right to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and participation in public life must never be criminalized. We are particularly concerned by the use of restrictive measures against activists, which appear not to serve the rule of law, but rather to suppress civic initiative and independent voices in society. The Human Rights Platform “Dayanç” declares: We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals persecuted on political grounds; We call on the authorities of Kazakhstan to uphold their international human rights obligations; We urge international organizations, including the United Nations, OSCE, the European Union, and human rights institutions, to provide a principled assessment of the situation and to use all available mechanisms to protect the rights of citizens in Kazakhstan. We also express our support for public initiatives and solidarity campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the fate of persecuted activists. The voice of civil society must not be silenced — it must be heard. Today, it is especially important to speak clearly and openly: freedom of expression is not a crime. Civic engagement is not a reason for repression. As human rights defenders, we know the cost of silence. That is why we speak — loudly and openly: Freedom for Marat Zhylandbayev. Freedom for Amangeldy Dzhakhin. Freedom for Elvira Bekzadina, Nurbol Onerkhan, and Kambar Zhusupov. Solidarity knows no borders. The struggle for human rights is shared.
