Visit of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the United States and the Problem of Total Lack of Transparency and Media Freedom in Turkmenistan

According to Radio Azatlyk Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan and former President of the country, paid a visit to the United States. Turkmen state media presented this visit as an important diplomatic step aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. However, the specific goals of the visit, the content of negotiations, and any possible agreements were not disclosed to the public. According to Radio Azatlyk, U.S. officials did not issue public statements confirming or denying the details of the visit at the time of publication. The Human Rights Platform of the civil movement “DAYANÇ / Turkmenistan” emphasizes that such lack of transparency is a systemic problem directly linked to the government's total control over the information space. In Turkmenistan, state media are fully controlled by the authorities and serve exclusively pro-government functions. They do not provide citizens with objective, complete, and reliable information about political decisions, international visits, and matters of public importance. So-called “alternative” media resources created within the country are also not independent and are used as instruments of state propaganda, shaping a one-sided information narrative. As a result, citizens of Turkmenistan are effectively deprived of access to independent and reliable information within their own country. At the same time, independent media, journalists, and civil activists face systematic pressure, persecution, and suppression. Independent journalism inside Turkmenistan has been almost entirely eliminated. Under these conditions, international and independent foreign media, including Radio Azatlyk, remain among the few sources providing relatively independent information to citizens. The Human Rights Platform “DAYANÇ / Turkmenistan” emphasizes that: — access to reliable information is a fundamental human right; — transparency of government actions is an obligation of authorities to their citizens; — suppression of independent media constitutes a violation of Turkmenistan’s international obligations, including Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which guarantees freedom of expression and access to information. The right of citizens to know the truth about government actions is an essential part of human rights and the foundation of a just society. Source: Radio Azatlyk Turkmenistan (Azatlyk Radiosy)
