Tragedy in Şanlıurfa: School Attack as an Alarming Signal for the Protection of Human Rights

The Human Rights Platform of the Civil Movement “Dayanç” (Turkmenistan) has received with deep sorrow and concern the news of the armed attack that took place at a school in the Siverek district of Şanlıurfa, Turkey. According to available information, an armed attacker entered the school premises and opened indiscriminate fire, injuring students, teachers, and staff present at the scene. The attacker later took his own life. Among the injured are children, which makes this tragedy particularly painful and alarming. We express our sincere condolences to all those affected, their families, and loved ones. We wish a speedy recovery to the injured and strength to everyone impacted by this tragedy. A school is a place of safety, knowledge, and future. Any act of violence committed in such spaces is not only a crime against individuals but also an attack on fundamental human rights — primarily the right to life, security, and education. We strongly condemn all forms of violence and believe that such acts must be addressed within the broader responsibility of the state to ensure the safety of its citizens. The protection of children and educational institutions must be an unconditional priority for any society. Such tragedies remind us of the importance of: timely response to threats effective prevention of violence provision of psychological and social support for youth transparency and accountability of state institutions The Human Rights Platform “Dayanç” emphasizes: violence against civilians, especially children, is unacceptable under any circumstances and contradicts the fundamental principles of human rights. We call for a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, as well as for all necessary measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. Today, it is especially important not only to mourn but also to act — to protect human life, dignity, and security. Photo from a news source (Halk TV), scene of the incident, Şanlıurfa, Turkey.
