Appeal of the Human Rights Platform “DAYANÇ / Turkmenistan” to UN Women Europe & Central Asia on Expanding Language Accessibility of Regional Webinars

The Human Rights Platform of the Civic Movement “DAYANÇ / Turkmenistan” has submitted an official letter to UN Women Europe & Central Asia regarding the regional consultation held ahead of the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70). In our letter, we expressed sincere appreciation for organizing regional consultations and webinars addressing women’s access to justice in Europe and Central Asia. International platforms remain among the few spaces where women’s rights issues can be discussed openly, particularly for citizens from countries with restricted civic space. At the same time, we raised concerns regarding language accessibility. In Turkmenistan, only a very small number of women speak English, and advanced proficiency is extremely rare. As a result, many citizens, including women’s rights defenders and civil society representatives, are effectively excluded from participating in English-only events. We respectfully requested consideration of: interpretation services in Russian, Turkish, and Turkmen; multilingual session formats; more inclusive participation mechanisms for the region. We also asked to receive advance notifications of upcoming webinars via email so that we can inform citizens of Turkmenistan and members of the diaspora in a timely manner. We believe that improved language accessibility would significantly enhance regional participation and ensure that the voices of Turkmen women are heard in international discussions.
